The Wella Xposure Student Hairdressing Competition 2012.

Hairdressing students at Lambeth College’s bustling ‘Next Generation Hair and Beauty’ salon (Vauxhall Centre) have been putting in extra hours and going head to head in pursuit of some priceless honours this term. The ambitious hopefuls each entered their work into the UK’s number one competition for hairdressing students nationwide, Xposure, which is held each year by renowned hair-care specialists Wella.

Xposure is aimed solely at hairdressing students and gives a springboard for aspiring hairdressers and stylists to unleash their competitive edge and launch their careers in style.

Fourteen Lambeth College students put forward their work in a competition held in our salon in south London. The students prepared their models using the many new skills and techniques they have acquired on our Hairdressing - CG VRQ Levels 2 and 3 courses. They enlisted the help of Beauty Therapy students to provide the make-up and beauty treatments prior to a professional photo-shoot and were required to direct their models and discuss art direction with the photographer.

This is the first year that Lambeth College students have entered the Xposure competition and are now awaiting to find out if the five shortlisted candidates will be heading to the regional heats and then, hopefully, the final.

The five students shortlisted are:

  • Ana Magalhaes
  • Maria Johnson
  • Renique Floran-Blackwood
  • Ohnecia Barnett
  • Beverly Williams

Tutor and Salon Supervisor Joy Foster said: “Though the students have been competing against each other to be entered for Xposure, they have also been incredibly supportive of one another. They have been given the opportunity to showcase what they can do and gain first-hand experience of working with a model on-location, and with professional photographers.”

Student Beverly Williams said: “I would dearly love for one of us to get through to the next round. Having said that, I know there will be some very stiff competition out there. I’ve already got a lot out of this project and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a question of keeping our fingers crossed now.”
