Former Lambeth College Radio Production student Ramsey Williamson, aka Carlos Slazenger, had his talents officially recognised this month at the Student Radio Awards 2011, indigO2 on London’s Greenwich peninsular.
At a glittering gala hosted by BBC Radio 1 presenters Annie Mac and Scott Mills, 14 different categories of radio programming were represented. Students from school sixth forms, colleges and universities packed the venue to await the announcements of each award winner.
Carlos Slazenger is, in his own words, 'the UK’s premier genre crunching, truly freestyle pop disc jockey - creating a roller coaster ride of styles and sounds.' His demo, Carlos Slazenger’s Audio Obstacle Course (a music show filled with an eclectic mix of retro pop and miscellaneous strangeness) was shortlisted for the ‘Best Specialist Music Programming’ category, sponsored by BBC Radio 6music.
The man behind Carlos Slazenger is radio enthusiast Ramsey Williamson. Ramsey came to the College last year to study the Radio Production - Advanced Media Techniques – CG Level 3 Diploma course at our Vox Radio studios at the Vauxhall Centre. Ramsey’s drive and ambition, combined with expert tutoring, excellent facilities and like-minded fellow students, lead him to pass the course with straight distinction grades. He also picked up one of the College’s prestigious Proud Awards along the way.
Ramsey attended the ceremony with tutor Sheila Smith and curriculum manager Bob Whitehead. Sheila said: “Ramsey was an excellent student. He gave one hundred percent commitment on his course and has huge amounts of creative talent in all areas of radio production. As his tutor I’m immensely proud of him and I know that he will succeed in the radio industry. Just receiving a nomination in these awards is enough to get your name passed around in all kinds of circles. Whoever takes him on will not be disappointed.”
Though disappointed not to win first prize, Ramsey was thrilled and honoured to have been chosen to attend the event. He said: “At last I’m starting to get my name passed around and already I’m being mentioned in the blogs and twitter feeds of radio bigwigs. Today, Absolute Radio highlighted my name and the title of my demo in their OGS (one golden square) blog. The nomination has given me a tremendous boost and will definitely propel me further into the wonderful world of radio.”
