HRH Princess Anne joined Lambeth College staff and students for a quick lesson in bricklaying at the World Skills event at ExCel-London.
HRH Princess Anne acquired some brand new bricklaying skills this month when she dropped in on Lambeth College's ‘Have a Go’ workshop area at the WorldSkills 2011 event at ExCel-London.
Staff and students from the College’s Faculty of Construction were thrilled to be able to guide HRH through the bricklaying process and tell of their enthusiasm for Lambeth College and the skills they are learning here.
The Princess Royal relished the opportunity to get her hands dirty, turning down the offer of an overall to protect her smart clothes, stating that ‘life is too short’. Bricklaying tutor John Duffy showed her how to hold and use the trowel, mix the cement, position the bricks and secure them in place, skilfully ensuring HRH wasn’t splashed with cement.
The Princess was then introduced to students on the College’s Bricklaying Entry Level 1 course who expressed their excitement at taking part in the event and talked about their ambitions and aspirations for the future.
Director of Faculty for Technology, Mike Bristow said: "The Royal visit to our 'Have a Go' area represents a brilliant endorsement of the great courses offered at Lambeth College. We are all honoured to have met Princess Anne and hope that she makes good use of the new bricklaying skills she has taken away with her."
Student Luke Bayland, 17, is no stranger to meeting members of the Royal Family. He said: "Meeting Princess Anne was fun. I’m very lucky because on completing my Prince’s Trust Volunteer Programme last year, I got to meet Prince Charles too."
Mohamed Dager, 18, who studies on the same course said: "I’ve really enjoyed today’s events. Taking part in World Skills has been brilliant but meeting a member of royalty was amazing."
WorldSkills London 2011 is the world's largest, international skills competition and careers event with young people from 51 countries and regions competing to be the best of the best in their chosen skill or discipline.
The World Skills event took place at London’s ExCel Exhibition Centre from Wednesday 5th to Saturday 8th October. Lambeth College was the most represented College taking part in the event. Bricklaying, Painting and Decorating and Plastering ‘Have a Go’ activities were organised by the College. Our sponsors were British Gypsum, Crown Paints and Hanson Heidelberg Cement Group.
